EU Deforestation Regulation

How Interu can help you achieve EUDR compliance

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is set to bring sweeping changes to global supply chains, requiring companies to verify that their products do not contribute to deforestation. Although implementation has faced delays, businesses cannot afford to wait. Now is the time to take action, preparing your supply chain for compliance, future-proofing operations against potential penalties and positioning your increased traceability as a competitive differentiator.

Preparing for EUDR: Practical Tips for Success

Meeting EUDR requirements with Interu

Compliance is not just about meeting requirements—it's about strategic preparation. Follow these key steps to ensure readiness:
Checking Product Scope
Identify which products fall within EUDR scope, including any applicable transition periods.
Sorting Data
Organise your data to meet minimum requirements and understand the steps needed for compliance, including necessary documentation.
Supplier Engagement
Communicate with suppliers to ensure they understand the importance of compliance and your expectations for documentation, procedures, and timelines. Provide tools that add value to their processes.
Understanding Workflows
For organisations with existing systems (e.g., ERPs, supply chain management), map out where relevant data is stored, its format, and how it needs to integrate with EUDR systems to avoid inefficiencies and extra costs.
Training and Education
Educate leadership and teams on EUDR risks and benefits, emphasising the importance of preparation and traceability for initiatives like supplier pre-screening and customer engagement.
Stakeholder Engagement
Align with your customers' needs related to EUDR compliance. Identify mutual goals and explore collaborative ways to meet requirements across the supply chain.

Obligations of Operators

Operators must not place on the market (or make available) compliant products without a due diligence statement, which must be kept for a minimum of 5 years. Operators must make information available to competent authorities and demonstrate to downstream operators/traders that due diligence was conducted, including passing on the reference numbers if relevant.
Article 4 - Obligations of Operators
Due Diligence Statements
Interu makes the creation of a Due Diligence Statement and the receipt of a reference number from TracesNT seamless and efficient via a direct integration.
Data sharing
Information at a product / supplier level, as well as a delivery, product or individual item level, can be passed onto downstream customers through Interu, providing a value added service for your customers.
Data storage
Data is organised in a way which saves time, and due diligence statements and associated information is saved securely for 5+ years on Interu.
Competent Authorities checks
Interu helps competent authorities (and users) save time on any investigations.

Obligations of Traders

SME Traders need to capture and share data (supplier and customer contact information and Traces NT reference numbers), relating to products they intend to place on the market. The data needs to be kept for 5+ years and made available to competent authorities on request

Due Diligence

Prior to placing or making goods available on the market, or exporting them, operators need to exercise due diligence on all products supplied by each particular supplier.
Article 8 - Due Diligence
End to End Traceability
End to end traceability via Interu allows users to demonstrate that they have captured and assessed information on all relevant points of origin.
DDS Integrations
Direct integration with Traces NT enables verification of supplier DDS References where applicable.
3rd Party Verification/Legality checks
3rd party verification checks through Interu allows for authorised 3rd party representatives to coordinate due diligence on behalf of you (or your suppliers). Verifiers can also add information relating to due diligence efforts, risk assessment and mitigation.
Geolocation/Deforestation risk
Expert GIS analysis of points of harvest in your supply chain through integration with earth observation suppliers.
Accountability/Supplier engagement
Improved accountability for data quality by giving suppliers their own accounts.

Information Requirements

Operators need to collect and organise information to evidence that products comply with EUDR. The evidence - documents, data, information - needs to be kept for 5 years from the date of placing the products on the market.
Article 9 - Information Requirements
End to End Traceability
Interu assists with the collection, organisation, analysis, sharing and storage of all potential information sources for any given delivery allowing for reporting in excess where necessary.
Automation
Information on static elements can be re-used to ‘automate’ delivery level risk assessment.
API integrations
An API first approach enables integration and data exchange with other systems (e.g., ERPs, Traces NT, standards databases), including supplier systems, to help gather the data.
Accountability/Supplier Engagement
Save time/improve accountability by suppliers passing information onto you directly through their own Interu accounts. This adds value to suppliers immediately.
Geolocation/Deforestation risk
Single point geolocation and polygon entry (included by API / bulk upload) and analysis.
Mobile application
Mobile application to assist with gathering of data at source [Future roadmap].
AI
AI to help make sense of data - translation, spotting duplicates, document classification, etc. - and make it easier to gather. [Future roadmap]
Data capture
Interu offers flexibility in terms of data capture - via manual entry, bulk upload, API by user or suppliers.

Risk Assessment

Operators need to risk assess the Article 9 information relating to products and assess if they have any risk of non-compliance before placing or making them available on the market.
Article 10 - Risk Assessment
End to End Traceability
End to end traceability - Interu helps to identify risk of mixing, country level risk, supply chain complexity risk, product risk, etc.
Traces NT integration
Through integration with Traces NT, your risk assessment findings and declaration of ‘negligible risk of deforestation’ can be digitally signed in Interu on your DDS and uploaded directly into TracesNT.
3rd party verification/legality checks
3rd party verification and due diligence checks within Interu can be captured as part of your risk assessment efforts.
Earth Observation analysis/deforestation risk
Interu’s GIS integration with 3rd party Earth Observation expert services can indicate plots of land in your supply chains where there may be risk of deforestation / land degradation and explain why that conclusion has been reached.
Public data sets
Connection with public data sets (such as corruption indices) or other 3rd party systems (such as the FSC database) can save you time and effort with risk assessment.
Customization
Your suppliers can be given their own Interu account. With ‘rulesets’ bespoke to your organisation and how you manage risk, suppliers can be alerted to gaps / risks prior to sending data to you.
Data reusability
Interu links ‘static’ supply chain risk assessments, to ‘dynamic’, shipment / transaction level risk assessments.
Risk assessment
Assessed risk levels are captured within Interu and ‘locked’ onto deliveries to be able to show your assessed risk at point of placing goods on the market.
Notifications
Notifications of expiration on risk assessments of static information (e.g., products, countries, suppliers) can be created to help you manage workflows.
Alerts
Alerts on potential deforestation activity at points of harvest in your supply chain can be facilitated through our GIS integration [near term roadmap]

Risk Mitigation

Risk mitigation procedures and efforts must be recorded and reported for any product which has been through Article 10 Risk Assessment and the Operator has concluded that the product has a risk of non-negligible risk of non-compliance. Operators need to make the mitigation efforts available to competent authorities on request and review them annually. They need to demonstrate how decisions about risk mitigation efforts were made.
Article 11 - Risk Mitigation
Certification
Through integration with 3rd party datasets, certification claims can be automatically checked, demonstrating mitigation measures.
Mitigation
Similarly, mitigation guidance from 3rd party databases (e.g., certification bodies such as Preferred by Nature) can be accessed through Interu, helping support your mitigation efforts and processes.
Evidence of risk mitigation
As a digital platform, Interu can capture your evidence of  risk mitigation, attaching it to the products or deliveries involved in a Due Diligence Statement, and providing transparency about what checks were conducted and when.
Customization
Risk mitigation measures can be configured uniquely to your organisation depending on the risk levels indicated at a product, supplier, country, etc. level.

Maintenance of Due Diligence System

Operators must establish and implement a Due Diligence System which should include and facilitate: Information requirements (Art.9), Risk assessment (Art.10), Risk mitigation (Art.11), reporting obligations, provision of access to information and maintain records for 5 years.
Article 12 - Maintenance of Due Diligence System
Due diligence audits
Interu as a Due Diligence System can be audited and checked by 3rd parties (with your permission).
Record keeping
Built with scalability and security in mind, Interu provides you with an auditable historical record of due diligence for 5+ years.
